UgnÄ— Karvelis

Ugnė Karvelis ( born June 13, 1935 in Noreikiškės, Lithuania, † March 4, 2002 in Paris, France) was a Lithuanian translator, critic, writer and ambassador, member of the UNESCO Executive Committee of 1997 to 2002.

Ugnė Karvelis was the daughter of Lithuanian politician Petras Karvelis ( Lithuanian Foreign Minister from 1925 to 1929 ) and the cultural activist Veronika Bakštytė. During the Soviet occupation ( 1940) Karvelis the family emigrated to Germany. From 1967 to 1979 Karvelis was the second wife of Argentine writer Julio Cortázar.
