UIC classification of goods wagons

The type designation of freight cars is an international letter marking, which contains the main technical features of this railway carriage. This marking is valid for all vehicles that are used in international transport.

This identification was already before 1960 developed by the UIC, but generally introduced only valid as of 1964. From 1968 associated members ( railway undertakings, infrastructure managers, railway transport company ) this identification had to be written on all freight wagons of UIC and OSShD. From 1964 to January 1968, the UIC - marking throughout Germany and has been implemented since then continuously developed.

This type designation is generally called UIC genus characters and consist of a "generic letter" ( capitalized) and one or more " letters " (lower case ) together and serve to identify the goods wagons properties, particularly during loading and operation is of importance. The UIC genus character is written below the UIC vehicle number and thus replaced the labels used so far.

Not all European freight wagons with UIC received the mark. For example, in Germany retained the few remaining narrow gauge caboose and freight car to its original generic.

Genus letters

The following table contains the sake of completeness, the uniform international generic letters for coaches (A to D, WL and WR), which will be treated in type designation system for passenger cars. Each wagon is assigned a type number whose first digit is the fifth digit of the 12 digit UIC car number.
