UIQ

UIQ (User Interface Quartz ) is a graphical user interface for mobile phones that is running on the Symbian operating system. It is no longer developed since 2009. UIQ Technology, the developer company was a subsidiary of Symbian Ltd.. and was adopted in November 2006 by Sony Ericsson. With the establishment of the Symbian Foundation and transfer of Symbian OS in the Symbian platform Sony Ericsson and Motorola gave up their support UIQ, the developer company said in January 2009, his bankruptcy.

History

UIQ uses a screen size of 208-240 × 320 pixels and has been optimized for pen input. Included with the surface include the phone function, messaging features like SMS, MMS, e-mail, the task list ( to- do list ), a voice recording, managing contacts on your phone, a calendar, a memo and a web browser for mobile surfing on the Internet. All functions can be selected here with a pen on the touch screen. Prerequisite for the function of UIQ is at least version 7 of Symbian OS.

The in 2005 newly introduced version 3.0 of UIQ also supports one-handed operation on mobile phones without touch screen. Thus, UIQ was from this version, a direct competitor to the user interface S60 from Nokia, which served to 352 × 416 pixels in the latest version of screen sizes (or larger on the Nokia E90). Among the first devices with UIQ 3.0, the full-featured smartphone Sony Ericsson P990i, the business mobile phone Sony Ericsson M600i and the Sony Ericsson W950i was from the Walkman series. The latest Sony Ericsson smartphones with UIQ are the P1i, which combines the advantages of the M600i (fixed keyboard with double letters) with those of the P990i (equipment ) in one compact unit and the Sony Ericsson W960i, which puts more emphasis on multimedia applications and has a classic keypad.

Motorola presented in 2007 at the 3GSM World Congress after a long time a UIQ smartphone called Motorizr Z8 ago. With a push-on, ergonomic design for one-hand operation equipped without pressure sensitive screen, it was available in April 2007.

The two owners, Motorola and Sony Ericsson, stated in 2008 known to bring any new UIQ smartphones onto the market. The 270 employees who were responsible for developing the user interface, has been canceled. Reasons for the abandonment of the joint venture were to be found in the fact that the interface has not found enough appeal in the market and that the common open source Symbian platform should be based on S60 instead on UIQ.
