Ujigami Shrine

The Ujigami Shrine (Japanese宇 治 上 神社, Ujigami -jinja ) is a Shinto shrine and is located at the foot of Mount Asahiyama on the eastern bank of the river Ujigawa in the city Uji in Kyoto Prefecture in Japan.

It is located just opposite the Byodo-in, for which he had been originally designed as a guardian shrine.

The main hall ( dogs ) of the shrine was built in the latter part of the Heian period in the architectural style of the Ikken - shanagare - zukuri, making it the oldest existing at present shrine building. The main hall also holds positions as the worship hall ( haiden ), a former villa and rebuilt in the early Kamakura period, and therefore the oldest church hall of Shinto, the national treasures of Japan.

Inside the shrine are three smaller buildings, the Chuden Shrine of Emperor ojin, the Saden shrine for U -ji -no- waki - ira -tsu -ko (菟 道 稚 郎 子) and Uden Shrine of Emperor Nintoku all under the roof of the Oiya building juxtaposed in the Nagare - zukuri style. U -ji -no- waki - ira -tsu -ko is known that he left to after the death of Emperor Ōjins, as crown prince, and thus its successor committed suicide by this his older stepbrother, the following Emperor Nintoku.

Along with several other shrines, temples and castles in Kyoto the Ujigami -jinja in 1994 by the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities ) has been appointed.
