The UK Championship (currently also williamhill.com UK Championship ) is a professional snooker tournament, which is one of the tournaments on the main tour. It is named after the World Snooker Championship is the most important tournament in snooker sports, both in terms of the sporting world as well as the number of points for the world ranking. Record winner with six triumphs is the Englishman Steve Davis.

History

. The tournament was first held entitled to participate as a United Kingdom Snooker Championship in 1977 at that time were only British player ( the first champion, the Irishman Patsy Fagan, represented an exception - he was also in possession of a British passport ).

Was wearing the first edition of the Tower Circus in Blackpool. In 1978 the tournament was first moved to the Guildhall Preston. 1984 UK Championship has been released for all players and received the rank of ranking tournament.

The tournament then moved often. First we went to the International Centre in Bournemouth and later at the Barbican Centre from York, where it is still held. From 2007 to 2010, the UK Championship was temporarily in the Telford International Centre in Telford instead ( as mentioned earlier the Grand Prix).

For sponsors, there were even more changes. Over the years, the following companies were the main sponsor: Coral, Tennant, Storm Seal, Royal Liver Assurance, Liverpool Victoria, Powerhouse, Travis Perkins, Maplin Electronics, Pukka Pies, 12BET.com and currently williamhill.com.

So far, twelve Maximum Breaks were played as part of the UK Championship. Willie Thorne, 1987 was the first player who achieved a highest break. This was followed by Peter Ebdon (1992 ), Stephen Hendry (1995 & 1999), Nick Dyson (qualification 2000), David Gray ( 2004), Ronnie O'Sullivan ( 2007), Ding Junhui (2008 ), Andy Hicks and Jack Lisowski (both 2012 in the qualification ), John Higgins (2012 ) and Mark Selby ( 2013).

In addition, Jamie Burnett achieved in 2004 a so-called 16- Reds clearance. Through a free pass to the start of the frame he managed a break of 148 points, which also represents the highest ever break in an official professional tournament.
