UK Space Agency

The UK Space Agency is an agency of the British government, which is responsible for the national space program. It was established on 1 April 2010 and replaced the British National Space Centre. She takes over the responsibility for the strategy in space and represents the United Kingdom in all areas for Outer Space Affairs. Also they should make all British, civil space activities under the supervision of a single authority. First, she works in the existing BNSC headquarters in Swindon, Wiltshire.

Founding and goals

The establishment of the Space Agency of the United Kingdom was announced by Lord Mandelson, Lord Drayson and astronaut Timothy Peake on 23 March 2010 at the conference room of Queen Elizabeth II. On 1 April 2010, the Authority began its work. Approximately 230 million pounds for the foundation and for the management received the UK Space Agency and other organizations. Prior to founding the UK Space Agency satellite and space industry had a value of £ 6 billion and had 68,000 jobs. The objective of the Authority is that this industry has in 2030 a value of £ 40 billion, 100,000 jobs and provides at least 10 % of the space products on the earth produces ( currently 6%). These plans come from the "Space Innovation and Growth Strategy " (Space - IGS).

International Space Innovation Centre

Part of the UK Space Agency, the 40 million -pound " International Space Innovation Centre " ( ISIC), which is to be built at Harwell, Oxford, in the vicinity of a research institute of the European Space Agency. Some of the tasks is to monitor climate change and to check the security of space systems. 24 million of the construction costs takes over the government, and the rest is done by the space industry (16 million pounds ). It will employ 700 people over 5 years.

Tasks

The UK Space Agency has the following functions of other authorities:

  • The full responsibility and all the staff of the British National Space Centre is adopted.
  • The contribution to the European Space Agency for Natural Environment Research Council, Science and Technology Facilities Council and Technology Strategy Board, including project grants and launch preparations.
  • The British part of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security and Galileo
  • The financial part of the European Union Satellite Centre
  • Funding for space technologies and occupations of the Research Councils UK Technology Strategy Board
