The Class 210 is a class built in Germany submarines for the Norwegian Navy. In Norway, the boats are known as Ula class.

History

The production of the boats was held in Germany, but was an international project. The combat information and fire control systems as well as parts of the shell come from Norway, the attack sonar from Germany, the Lateralsonarsystem from France. Were manufactured the boats in the North Sea plants in Emden, which is why they are regarded as " German design ". The boats are considered to be very low but had various problems with the machinery.

The KNM Ula was damaged by a torpedo launch exercise for 1989. KNM Uredd in a botched docking maneuvers in 1991, in a fire in the control room in February 1992 severely damaged.

When NATO exercise Joint winter in 2004 was one of the boats, the KNM Utvær disqualified because they unexpectedly a planned landing operation prevented, but it was an integral part of the exercise. It " sunk " during the exercise simply too many ships, including the HMS Invincible.

Today, the boats, especially in the Mediterranean are active, where they support NATO 's Operation Active Endeavour. They proved to be particularly effective in the collection of intelligence data; However, new air conditioning systems had to be installed to reduce the increase by the warmer water temperature inside again.

The boats replaced the Class 207 and shall remain in service until 2020, where modernization is planned. From 2006-2008, the U- boats were modernized. So they got especially new electronics such as a Link -11 communication system, improved electronic support measures and an improvement of the periscope. In May 2008, a contract was signed with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for new sonar systems that are to be installed within 52 months.
