Ulawa Island

Ulawa is an island in Oceania. It belongs to the Melanesian island nation of the Solomon Islands and is part of the province of Makira and Ulawa. Ulawa located about 1000 km south of the equator in the western Pacific Ocean. It is located about 40 km southeast of the nearest larger island Maramasike (South Malaita ). The main island of the province, Makira (San Cristobal ) is about 65 km away.

Ulawa has an area of ​​about 66 square kilometers and about 4,500 inhabitants. It has a hilly, densely bewaldetete landscape. The highest point rises to 343 meters. Capital is Hajja on the west coast.

The island has been inhabited since about 750 AD. The Spanish explorer Alvaro de Mendaña sighted Ulawa in 1568.

The population of the island speaks a dialect of the Austronesian language Sa'a.
