Ulawun

The Ulawun (also: The Father, Ulawon, Uluwun, VATR, North Son) is a volcano on the Papua New Guinea island of New Britain belonging. With a height of 2334 m, it is one of the highest mountains of the island.

The volcano is one of a group of volcanoes that are found in the subduction zone in New Britain ( Bismarck Volcanic Group / Bismarck volcanic arc). In the immediate vicinity there is the volcano Bamus.

On 29 September 2000 there was a major outbreak with ash rain. Therefore 4,000 residents were evacuated from the endangered zones around the volcano. The volcano has since been repeatedly active with minor eruptions, therefore he heard that are constantly monitored by the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory to the volcanoes.

The volcanoes of Papua New Guinea emit a great deal of sulfur dioxide. Studies have shown that the Ulawun about 7 kg / s SO2 discharges. That is about 2% of global emissions.
