Uldis Bērziņš

Uldis Berzins ( born May 17, 1944 in Riga) is a Latvian poet and translator.

Life

Berzins studied Latvian philology at the University of Latvia and published his first collection of poems in 1980. Afterwards, he studied Turkish language at the lectern of Oriental Studies of the University of Leningrad ( 1968-1971 ), and specifically at the Department of African Studies at the State University Moscow ( he focused on Persian and Turkish ), at the State University of Tashkent ( Uzbek language ), University of Iceland ( Icelandic), and, among others in Czechoslovakia and Sweden.

He translated from Polish, 's Russian, Altnordischem, Turkish, Turkmen, Persian, Althebräischem, Arabian; He also knows Ivrit, Tatar and Chuvash language.

Berzins participated in the seminar for the translations of the Bible at the University of Amsterdam and in the forum of the translations of the Koran, which was arranged by the University of Lund. Since 2002 he teaches Turkish language at the University of Latvia. Since the 1990s, he also is regarded as an active politician of the Latvian Social Democratic Party.
