Ulf Sterner

Ulf Ivar Erik Sterner ( born February 11, 1941 in Deje ) is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey player ( left wing ), who played the first trained in Europe players in the National Hockey League for the New York Rangers in 1965.

Career

At the age of 15 years he played in the second league of Sweden Forshaga IF and the boy care of quite a stir. At 17 years and nine months was the nimble and very skillful Sterner became the youngest Swedish national team and in his first international match on 12 November 1959, he also scored his first goal equal.

It also took him to the Olympic Games in Squaw Valley in 1960. In Sweden, he moved to Frölunda HC to Gothenburg and internationally, he regularly took part in world championships. The title he won then with the Tre Kronor team at the Ice Hockey World Championship 1962 in Colorado Springs and Denver, USA. The following year, the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1963 was the domestic Stockholm. In the penultimate game against Canada Sterner defeated with a hat-trick Canadians almost single-handedly, but a narrow defeat in the last match against Czechoslovakia prevented the title defense.

For the season 1964/65 he dared the first player, who had learned the Hockey in Europe, the jump to the NHL. In addition to four games with the New York Rangers, he also played in the Minor lying at the Baltimore Clippers in the American Hockey League and the St. Paul Rangers CPhl.

He returned to Sweden after a year and played a few successful years for Rögle BK and BK Färjestad. In 1973 he moved to England for another year to the London Lions.

In the late 80s Sterner coached some German second division. 1986/87 SV Bayreuth, 1987/88 the riser EC Hedos Munich and 1988/89 the EV Füssen.

He was honored with induction into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2001.
