Ulmet, Germany

Ulmet is a municipality in the district of Kusel, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Altenglan. Ulmet is a nationally recognized tourist.

The name Ulmet probably goes back to the Latin Ulmetum = elm forest.

Geography

The place is situated on the Glan in Kusel Musicians country in the Western Palatinate. To the north is Rathsweiler, in the south Erdesbach.

To Ulmet includes the residential places Felschbachhof and Mühlwieshof.

History

Ulmet as a Celtic foundation wears a place name of Celtic origin, like the name of Kusel ( Cosla ) and Altenglan ( Gleni ). Also, the river name is of Celtic origin Glan.

In a document of the monastery Remigiusberg 1267 Ulmet the name appears for the first time, as a Olmone. Other forms of the name are: 1364 Olmut, 1387 Olmüth, 1416 Olmud, 1422 Olmaon, Olmont 1436 Olmudt, 1446 Olmut, 1456 Olle Mont, 1460 Olmud and Olmudt, 1477 Olmuett, 1480 Olmüt, 1544 Olmeth, 1588 Ulmeth, Ulmüth 1634 again Olmeth, 1756 Ulmeth and around the middle of the 19th century, due to the elimination of h at the end of the name, finally with today's spelling. One should bear in mind here that different spellings are often due to the carelessness of royal scribe.

Culture and sights

The Grade II listed parish church, called for centuries corridor chapel dates from the year 1091.

The eight-kilometer trail runs from Ulmet waters after Erdesbach.

The Kappeler Bridge was first mentioned in 1542. The new building of 1748 fell victim to the flood of 1784. Since the subsequent reconstruction of the bridge endures to this day.

Economy and infrastructure

In Ulmet there is a kindergarten and a primary school.

The place is located on the B 420 in the southwest is the A 62 in Altenglan is a station of the railway line Landstuhl - Kusel. Ulmet itself decreed from 1904 to 1991 a railway station on the now disused Glantalbahn.
