Ulrich Becher

Ulrich Becher ( born January 2, 1910 in Berlin, † April 15, 1990 in Basel ) was a German writer and playwright. He is the father of Martin Roda cup.

Life

Ulrich Becher was born in Berlin as the son of lawyer Richard mugs and pianist Elisabeth Ulrich. After visiting the outdoor school community in Wickersdorf where the musical talents were specially trained, he began studying law in Berlin. At the same time he began training as a painter. Already during his school years he had made the acquaintance of George Grosz, who recognized his photographic talent and took him as a single master student.

But his skills were also on poetic territory. As the son of the Swiss pianist Elisabeth Ulrich he hoped to live in Switzerland as a writer, but in the eyes of the Swiss authorities repudiated his anti-fascist attitude towards the principle of neutrality. The Aliens Police denied him a work permit and advised him to emigrate abroad. Thereupon the Bechers the group to Hermann Mathias Goergen followed, with the pair in March 1941 managed to escape to Portugal to Brazil.

Efforts to obtain a visa for the United States dragged on for three years. When they finally got the entry permit, they moved in 1944 to New York at the in-laws.

1948 Ulrich Becher returned back to Europe with a theater piece The Bockerer in the luggage, which he had co-authored with Peter Preses. The piece should be in Vienna was a great success. His estate is located in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern and in exile archive of the German National Library in Frankfurt.

A selection of his books, prints and drawings from the twenties and thirties was issued in May 2012 in the gallery Red bookseller in Berlin. It seemed a small publication with color illustrations of his work. The exhibition was opened, among others, Martin Roda cup.
