Ulrich Förstermann

Ulrich Förstermann ( born April 4, 1955 in Hildesheim ) is a German physician and pharmacologist.

Life

Förstermann studied from 1973 to 1980 medicine at the Albert -Ludwigs- University in Freiburg im Breisgau. He received his doctorate in 1980 for Dr. med with a pharmacological topic. His first assistant years (1980-1984) he spent at the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology (Chair: Georg Hertting ) of the Albert -Ludwigs- University. In 1984, he joined the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Hannover Medical School ( MHH), where he qualified in July 1986 and in 1987 was appointed professor C2. In 1989, Förster man with a Heisenberg Fellowship from the German Research Foundation ( DFG) in the United States. Here he worked with the late Nobel Prize winner for medicine Ferid Murad in the laboratories of Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, Illinois. At the same time he obtained a position as " Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology " at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. Starting in 1991 as a project initiated Förstermann the vessel Biological Division at Abbott Laboratories. In 1993 he accepted an appointment to the chair (C4 - Professorship) of Pharmacology, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz after refusing a corresponding call of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt. 2009-2013 Förstermann was Vice President for Research at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Since April 2013 he is scientific director and dean of the University Medical Center Mainz.

Since 2011 Förstermann is a member of the Citizens' Initiative Pro cultural town of Freiburg.

Research and scientific activities

Förstermann developed his research significantly enhance our understanding of the endothelium-dependent relaxation of blood vessels ( by nitric oxide ), the identification of the enzyme group of nitric oxide synthases, as well as the phenomenon of oxidative stress in the vascular system. Förstermann has published over 250 articles in scientific journals with peer-review system and with over 21,000 citations of the most cited pharmacologists in the world ( Hirsch - index: 78). He is also the author and co-editor of one of the major German pharmacology textbooks .. Förstermann was president of EPHAR - Federation of European Pharmacological Societies 2010-2012, President -Elect of the European umbrella organization from 2008 to 2010 and remains on the Executive Committee of EPHAR active. From 2006 to 2011 Förstermann was also deputy chairman of the German Society of Pharmacology.

Awards and prizes

Förstermann received a number of scientific prizes; so the Goedecke / Warner -Lambert Research Award in 1979 by the Albert -Ludwigs- University of Freiburg, the Fritz Külz price of Pharmacology 1986, the German Society for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, Rudolph Schoen Award of the Medical School in 1989 Hannover and a Heisenberg fellowship from the German research Foundation 1989-1993 (which he returned early in 1991, see above).
