Ulrich Luz

Ulrich Luz ( born February 23, 1938 in Männedorf ) is a Swiss theologian. Until 2003 he was Professor of New Testament at the University of Bern.

Life

Raised in Männedorf, Ulrich Luz made ​​his Matura 1956 at Freies Gymnasium Zurich. He studied Protestant theology in Zurich, Göttingen and Basel. After his residency, promotion 1967 Swiss with Eduard and his habilitation in 1968, he spent a year working as a pastor in Zurich -Seebach, then for two years as a guest lecturer at two universities in Tokyo. From 1972 to 1980 he was professor of New Testament at Göttingen, then until his retirement in 2003 in Bern.

His research focuses on the Gospel of Matthew - as the principal author of a highly detailed exegetical commentary -, history (especially the history of religion ) of early Christianity and biblical hermeneutics. He is or was co-editor of the Evangelical Catholic Commentary on the New Testament, the works from the estate of Albert Schweitzer and the magazines Protestant theology, Judaica and New Testament Studies.

Ulrich Luz received seven honorary doctorates, most recently in 2006 by the University of Uppsala. His works have been translated into nine languages. He lives in Laupen near Bern.
