Ulrich Wehling

Ulrich Wehling ( born July 8, 1952 in Halle ( Saale), then Saxony -Anhalt ) is a former star for the GDR border skier in the Nordic combined and German sports official.

Career

Wehling, the son of a lawyer and a pharmacist, graduated from the Children's and Youth Sports School in Upper Wiesenthal in 1972 with the Abitur. After the junior world title in 1971, he was the dominant skier in the Nordic combined in the 1970s. He performed as the only Nordic Combiner after another sensational performance of three Olympic victories. Wehling, who started for the SC tractor Oberwiesenthal, won the gold medal in 1972 in Sapporo, 1976 in Innsbruck and 1980 in Lake Placid. He was also 1974 world champion and 1978 bronze medalist of the World Championship in that sport. Holmenkollen Ski Festival in Oslo when winning three times (1975-1977); In 1976 he was awarded the Holmenkollen medal.

Ulrich Wehling graduated with a degree in physical education teacher at the German University of Physical Culture. After his retirement from competitive sports, he first worked in 1980/81 as an employee at the Scientific Centre of the German skier (DSLV ) in Leipzig. From 1982 to 1990 he was deputy general secretary and 1990 respectively President and Secretary General of the DSLV the GDR. Furthermore, Wehling worked from 1981 to 1990 member and 1990 Vice- President of the NOC of the GDR. From 1976 to 1981 Wehling member of the Central Council of the FDJ and until 1990 also a member of the SED.

After working from 1990 to 1992 as coordinator of the German Ski Association in the new federal states he was from 1992 to 2012 Athletic Director or Race Director of the International Ski Federation FIS Committee for the Nordic Combined.

Ulrich Wehling is married to the former luger Eva -Maria Wernicke since 1976 and the couple have two daughters. He lives in Oberhofen ( Switzerland ).

On the occasion of the 475- year anniversary, he was named an honorary citizen of Upper Wiesenthal 2002. In the GDR, he was several times awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit. In 1980 he was awarded the medal in gold.
