Ulrich Wilcken

Ulrich Wilcken ( born December 18, 1862 in Stettin, † December 10, 1944 in Baden -Baden ) was a German historian and papyrologist.

Life

After studying Ancient History and Oriental Studies in Leipzig, Tübingen and Berlin Wilcken in 1885 received his doctorate with a thesis on the Roman Egypt on the basis of the Berlin papyri. His main academic teacher was Theodor Mommsen, who also continued to promote him and gave him a place to catalog the papyri of the Royal Library in Berlin. Wilcken made ​​several study trips and habilitated in 1888 for Ancient History.

In 1889 he was on advocacy Mommsen Associate Professor of Ancient History in Breslau ( as successor to Edward Meyers ), where he prevailed thanks to Mommsen's help against Karl Julius Beloch, 1891 full professor. In 1900 he was called to Würzburg, 1903 in Halle (again as a successor to Edward Meyers ), 1906 to Leipzig, Bonn 1912 and 1915 to Munich, where he has been appointed in the same year as a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. For the last time changed Wilcken 1917, the university, when he succeeded Otto Hirschfeld in Berlin. He was a member of the Saxon Society of Sciences (since 1906) and the Prussian Academy of Sciences (since 1921) and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome (since 1921). In 1931 he became Professor Emeritus.

Services

Wilcken was the pioneer of the Greco-Roman papyrology in Germany. With the support of Theodor Mommsen he created extensive corpora of Ptolemaic papyrus documents and ostraca and founded in 1899 the archives for Papyrus research and related areas. His co-authored with Louis Mitteis papyrological introduction and collection selection (Broad and Chrestomathie the Wessely ) was fundamental in academic classes for a long time. Also Wilcken Greek history was launched again and again over the decades.
