Val d'Ultimo near St. Gertraud

The Val d'Ultimo, also known simply Ultimo (Italian Val d'Ultimo ), is 40 km long valley of Falschauer in South Tyrol, Italy. It runs parallel to the northern reaches from the Val Venosta and Stelvio National Park up to Lana in Merano ( Burggrafenamt ). Most of the Val d'Ultimo Ultimo belongs to the municipality.

The villages in Val d'Ultimo, in the valley -major order are,

  • St. Gertraud (1501 m, about 300 inhabitants)
  • St. Nicholas ( 1256 m, about 300 inhabitants)
  • Kuppelwies ( 1153 m, about 150 inhabitants)
  • St. Walburg ( 1190 m, about 2,200 inhabitants)
  • St. Pancras ( 735 m, about 1,568 inhabitants)

Between St. Walburg and St. Pancras branches off to the south from the road into the Val di Non.

In the vicinity of St. Gertraud is a natural monument, the three " Ultner Urlärchen ", which have long been concerned primarily in popular belief as over 2000 years old. A 2004 written at the University of Innsbruck thesis corrects the age of the larch trees on about 850 years. As the trees are rotten inside, the age could not be determined exactly, but was determined by use of different calculation methods approximate.

The place has St. Walburg with the La Tène holocaust site in church hill on a prominent archaeological site in the Alps.

In the center of Val d'Ultimo is the Schwemmalm ski area. Furthermore, there is a cross -country run from St. Nicholas to St. Gertraud.

The Val d'Ultimo also offers many tour options for hikers. Beginning of marked hiking trails to high alpine tour routes. The highest mountains of the Val d'Ultimo is the rear harrow peak with 3,443 m.

In the 19th and early 20th century, many famous personalities have stayed especially in the seaside resort Mitterbad at St. Pancras on, such as Empress Elisabeth v. Austria, Bismarck, Franz Defregger, Hermann Sudermann, Franz Kafka, Hermione v. Preuschen, canon Count Lippe, Thomas Mann ( of here ended his Buddenbrooks ) and Heinrich Mann. Many came because of the well-known physician and philosopher Christoph Hartung of Hartungen, the operation on Lake Garda in Riva the sanatorium of Hartungen and rear Val d'Ultimo, in St. Nicholas, his summer villa Hartung Hausen had.
