Ultra Panavision 70

Ultra Panavision was a 1962 movie recording process introduced for 70mm wide screen movies.

Background

Ultra Panavision was identical to the Camera 65 by MGM. With an anamorphic lens, the image was compressed by a factor of 1.25 and recorded with a frame rate of 24 frames per second on a 65mm film negative. It was a 70mm film print with six Magnettonstreifen or a conventional 35mm film prints are created. In both formats, the picture during the film screening was equalized with an anamorphic lens. A performance in the full 2.76:1 aspect ratio in the 70mm format was not always possible due to the limited screens. Even when copying to the 35mm film were lost image information. When turning this had to be taken into account. Despite the losses, the lateral image was convincing in the 70mm roadshow performances and was characterized by good image quality on the 35mm film.

Panavision already developed the Camera 65 for MGM. After Ben Hur refined Panavision lens system and the cameras reduced. During the production of Mutiny on the Bounty Panavision took over the format of MGM and renamed it in Ultra Panavision. The recording process was now also other film studios. Between 1963 and 1966 created six major productions. While United Artists was responsible for four films, Paramount awarded with The Fall of the Roman Empire and Warner Bros. with the last battle only one film in this format.

Some scenes in The West Was Won were included in Ultra Panavision and copied to the three-lane Cinerama format. With the exception of The Fall of the Roman Empire, all filmed in Ultra Panavsion films were advertised as Cinerama in 1963. The 70 mm film copy for Cinerama had to be optically corrected to enable the performance on the curved screen. The advent of 70mm Blow Up, the more expensive film stock and the cumbersome cameras finally prevented a regular film production. During the filming Ice Station Zebra Ultra Panavision was replaced by Super Panavision, which meant the definitive end of the admission process.
