Ultrasaurus

  • South Korea ( Hayang Group)
  • Ultrasaurus tabriensis Kim, 1983

Ultrasaurus is a possible genus of dinosaur from the group of sauropods. She was described in 1983 by paleontologist Haang Mok Kim basis of two bone fragments derived from the Lower Cretaceous of South Korea. The only kind named Kim tabriensis as Ultrasaurus. Due to the incompleteness of the fossil Ultrasaurus can not be distinguished from other sauropod genera currently, so the genus is now run as a noun dubium ( dubious name). Also, for a systematic classification within the sauropods deliver the few remnants too few clues.

There are only a fragment of the spinous process of a caudal vertebra, and a fragmentary humerus known. However, Kim held the upper arm bone mistaken for a very large yard, and concluded that it had to be an unusually large sauropods - accordingly he chose the generic name ( Ultrasaurus - " About lizard" ). The fossils come from a road digestion in the north of the former Gyeongsang province Korean -do. This locality, which counts for Hayang group also contained the thigh bone of a theropod dinosaur.

Ultrasaurus and Ultrasauros

Kim has Ultrasaurus 1983 scientifically described. The term " Ultrasaurus ", however, was previously used as an unofficial name for a discovered in the U.S. in 1979 and provided animal as a new genus name. The official description of this animal under the name Ultrasaurus macintoshi followed until 1985, however, the use of the same name injured for two different genera the International Regulations for Zoological Nomenclature ( ICZN ): . These rules provide that in the event of the same name, the earlier scientific publication is relevant, in this case, the Korean Fund. Therefore, had for the American genus subsequently another name chosen - Ultrasauros. It is clear today that the North American, referred to as Ultrasauros findings of two different dinosaurs come, the name is invalid.
