Ultrix Window Manager

The Ultrix Window Manager was published in 1985 by DEC. Shortly afterwards, he became the default window manager for the X Window system, from the version X10R3. Originally there were two other window manager in X containing ( xwm and xnwm ). However, it was only uwm ported to the X11 protocol. He remained the standard window manager until he was in version X11R4 replaced by twm.

UDE Window Manager

Also uwm is the name of the window manager, the desktop environment UDE (Unix Desktop Environment ), which is not yet complete, however, it is readily possible to use it with components from other desktop environments. The first version was released in 1998 and has nothing to do with the aforementioned Ultrix Window Manager.

Main focus of this window manager is the rapidity and an alternate user interface. Instead of GTK and QT such as KDE and GNOME only the simple Xlib libraries are used.

The user experience is different from other environments especially by the complete absence of icons or a taskbar on the desktop. Instead, all activities with the three mouse buttons to run. The changes, minimize, maximize, and close the window is done through a circular pie menu, called Honeycomb menu. This consists of six honeycomb icons with the respective options and appears at a click with the left mouse button on the frame of a window. With clicks using the middle and right mouse button one can, however, modify the window shape.

The Start menu (Application menu) appears after clicking with the right mouse button on any point on the part of the desktop that is not occupied by windows. With the middle mouse button to switch between the different applications and virtual desktops.

An advantage of this approach is that the display area can be fully utilized. The frames of the windows are also very narrow. Disadvantage is that a three - button mouse is required to use UWM meaningful way. Also the support of keyboard shortcuts is rudimentary.

The current version of the window manager is 0.2.9b.
