History

Black Metal phase

On the demo recording Vargnatt, the split EP with Mysticum and the first album that in November and December 1994 recorded and eventually published in 1995 Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler, Ulver played folk -influenced black metal. Bergtatt characterized by fast tempo, sober electric guitars, acoustic passages, the change from scream - and hymn-like vocals, as well as an imaginative storyline. In the scene, but the band had more of an outsider status.

The second album Kveldssanger stood in stark contrast to the first, it found itself on no electric guitar and no more screaming vocals, but folklore, acoustic music and chamber cantatas. Kristoffer " Garm " Rygg designated Kveldssanger as " immature ," but later said the comment was based on the version and been exaggerated.

The third album Nattens Madrigal - Aatte anthem Til Ulven i almonds was even more aggressive than Bergtatt. Style and production were kept raw. The label Century Black described the album as a return to the traditional Black Metal. The texts of the first three albums were all archaisierten in a ( designated by the band as old Danish), written poeticizing Norwegian, with the impression of an ancient language by the (partially free fantasized ) orthography is achieved.

On 29 and 30 May 1996 Ulver took with Jan Axel " Hellhammer " Blomberg of Mayhem and Arcturus on drums on the title Synen, which was released in 1997 on the compilation Souvenirs from Hell by Cthulhu Records.

Turning to electronic music

With the published 1998 album Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell to Garm, composer and sound engineer gates Ylwizaker and some guest vocals from the Black Metal and integrated elements of industrial metal and ambient passages away. The album was the entire text of the prophetic prose poem The Marriage of Heaven and Hell by William Blake again. It received both from the metal and from the alternative area of good reviews.

The next two releases Metamorphosis and Perdition City were even more experimental. Ulver moved further away from rock and metal towards an electronic genre, as it represented the bands Coil and The Future Sound of London. The title of the Metamorphosis EP was programmatic: It united Drum and Bass, Trip Hop and Ambient and can be seen as a prelude to the trip-hop album Perdition City. The inlay of the Metamorphosis EP a comment was published, which resulted in a clear rejection of categorization Ulver as a black metal band expressed. It was followed by 2001, the purely instrumental and minimalist ambient Publications Silence Teaches You How to Sing and Silencing the Singing which were published in 2002 under the title Teachings in Silence as a compilation.

In 1993-2003: 1st Decade in the Machines found themselves - to 10-year -anniversary - of various bands (among Merzbow ) and musicians (among Fennesz ) electronically neuaufbereitete Ulver pieces from all previous work periods.

Film Music

Between 2001 and 2003, Ulver produced the soundtrack for Lyckantropen, Svidd Negroes and Uno. The soundtrack Lyckantropen Themes was exclusively electronic and minimalist arrange, while the powerful sound of an orchestra was repeatedly interrupted by ambient passages on Svidd Negro. The Uno soundtrack was a collaboration with composer Tom McRae, the film director and actor Aksel Hennie from won several awards. Ulver's contribution shuttled between this melancholy violin and organ passages and the dominant on the Metamorphosis EP - techno sounds. McRae's contributions to the movie soundtrack included gangsta rap and hip- hop elements.

Variety of styles

In July 2004, the band finished the album turned Blood Inside, which was released on 6 June 2005. This album topped the adopted since the late nineties path. Influences of various music genres (including rock and post-rock ) were mixed together, but the band was also of a more accessible page. After ten very productive years Ulver now put a hiatus; they justified this in July 2007 with a need for seclusion and their dissatisfaction with the world and the music business. At the same time they announced the release of a new and their most personal album, Shadows of the Sun. It sounds more homogeneous than the eclectic Blood Inside and approaches partially Perdition City and Teachings in Silence at. The style goes even more in the direction of Ambient, various elements of chamber music or jazz in the style of Nils Petter Molvaer can be heard on Shadows of the Sun. From the British music magazine Terrorizer album was chosen retrospectively among the top 100 of the decade and was ranked 67 of the rankings.

Ulver occurred in 2009 for the first time in 15 years to live. This was followed by more concerts. The live performance of 31 July 2010 in Oslo was finally released in November 2011 under the title The Norwegian National Opera on DVD and Blu- ray Disc. The live album contained 17 pieces from the past 13 years; Songs of the first three albums Kristoffer Rygg intended claims to not perform live.

Beginning of March 2011 was announced by the label Kscope the release of the new album Wars of the Roses for the 25th April of the year. The band kept on the album its dark style and also took influences from art rock, gothic rock, wave and post-rock into their compositions. With the new album Ulver also announced that Daniel O'Sullivan, who had already supported since 2009 the band live, would remain an integral part of Ulver. On 28 March 2012, after Ulver had begun in 2008 with individual recordings, released their album Childhood's End, which contained only cover versions of rock songs of the 1960s and thus the electronic and experimental arrangements of previous albums in favor of a more conventional instrumentation with guitar, bass, drums and keyboards let fade into the background. One of the pieces was a few weeks previously published on the occasion of a live performance at Tilburg Roadburn Festival Roadburn on the EP. A replay of the presentation itself appeared a year later as Live at Roadburn - Eulogy for the Late Sixties.

The end of 2012 Ulver again declared their dissatisfaction with the music industry and announced that they will increasingly even at the - to take care of distribution of their music - especially digital. As part of this they put Oddities & Rarities # 1, a compilation with pieces that were published eg on tribute albums or the UN Soundtrack, available to download.

In August 2012, Ulver announced that they had been entrusted with a new work and his performance with the 21 -member chamber orchestra from Tromsø Tromsø culture center. The premiere of the yet untitled work took place on 21 September 2012. It was recorded and should form the basis for Ulver next studio album. The Title IX fair VI.X was announced in December of this year. In the Wave -Gotik-Treffen in May 2013 could have been performed with the STÜBAphilharmonie under the direction of Martin Lentz in the pantheon of Leipzig. The album was released in August 2013.
