Ulvi Cemal Erkin

Ulvi Cemal Erkin ( born March 14, 1906 in Istanbul, † June 2, 1972 in Ankara) was a Turkish composer.

Erkin studied in Paris with Jean and Noël Gallon and Nadia Boulanger. Since 1930 he was a professor at the State Conservatory in Ankara, which he headed from 1949 to 1951 also. Later he was also conductor of the State Opera. He belonged to the Turkish Five, the group of the first professional composer Turkey, among the Cemal Resid Rey besides himself, Ferid Alnar, Ahmet Adnan Saygun and Necil Kâzım Akses.

Erkin composed two symphonies and a Sinfonietta, a violin and a piano concerto, a concerto for piano and symphony orchestra, chamber works, ten Turkish folk songs for mixed choir, piano works, songs and folk song arrangements.
