Umba River (Tanzania)

BW

The Umba is a river in northeastern Tanzania in Tanga Region. It rises in the Schageiuwald ( Shagayu ) in the West Usambara Mountains at 2,000 meters above sea level and flows on the northern side of the mountain range to the east. In Lelwa the Mbalamu that comes from the extreme north of the Usambara Mountains, and the Mglumi in the Umba opens. Just before it flows into the Indian Ocean, he crosses the border into Kenya. The estuary itself marks the easternmost point of the boundary between Tanzania and Kenya, from which it was drawn from them in a largely straight line to the northwest towards Lake Victoria in the 19th century. At the headwaters of the river mid-1960s were rich deposits of precious stones (especially sapphires and spessartines ) discovered. Also the river is the Umba River Game Reserve, a game reserve, which includes along with the Mkomazi Reserve about 2600 km ².

Hydrometrie

Average monthly flow of the Umba measured at the hydrological station at Mbuta, about 40 km upstream of the mouth in m³ / s (1963 - 2003). The Umba flows stimulate time-dependent, as most of the rivers in the region.
