Umeå

? Umeå / i [ ʉ ː meo ː ] (local dialect: [ ʉ ː mə ] ) is a town in the Swedish province of Västerbotten County Västerbotten and historical. Umeå is located at the mouth of the Ume River älv the Gulf of Bothnia, and is the residence of the province and capital of the municipality of the same name.

Umeå is the biggest city in Norrland and the twelfth largest in Sweden with 79 594 inhabitants in the year 2010. Population has more than doubled in the last 50 years, which makes Umeå to one of the fastest growing cities in Sweden. The municipality of Umeå had 2011 115.229 inhabitants in the year. Purpose of the church is 2050 to grow to 200,000 inhabitants.

Umeå is also the city of birches called, since after a devastating fire in 1888, about 3,000 birches were planted in the urban area. It is to Luleå Sweden's northernmost university city with two universities and a total of about 37,000 students.

2010 Umeå was selected together with Riga as the European Capital of Culture 2014. On 31 January 2014, the go-ahead for the European Capital of Culture in Umeå, which includes amongst others, the patrons of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel arrived.

History

Umeå received city rights in 1588, the founding of the city near the church of Umeå and the associated trading venue fell through, however. 1622 another attempt was made, but not until around 1640, the city began to develop. Umeå was the residence of the province of Västerbotten. In the Great Northern War in the early 18th century, the city was burned down in 1714 by Russian troops. She recovered but after that and had about 1,000 inhabitants around 1800. In 1809, the last military battles were near the city fought on Swedish soil and the city conquered again by the Russians.

In 1885, Umeå had 2,930 inhabitants. A fire on June 25, 1888 destroyed the city again. 2,500 of the 3,000 residents lost their homes. The birch tree-lined avenues, for which the city is famous since then have been created after the fire in order to impede the spread of the flames. The city is therefore known as the "City of Birches " in Sweden. Today in Umeå are around 3000 birches. Due to the northern location, they suggest only from about 25 May and lose their leaves again in the second half of September.

In the 20th century, the city developed into a service and cultural center for the northern Norrland, in connection with the establishment of the University of Umeå in 1965.

Coat of arms

The first coat of arms Umeå consisted of three reindeer heads and plunged twenty years after the city was founded in 1622 on. 1646 Queen Kristina certain that the city should carry their heads as coat of arms. The design has been slightly changed up to the present time, but there were always three heads. They have their origin in the coat of arms of the historic landscape Västerbotten, representing a reindeer.

Umeå is an important service center for northern Sweden. In Umeå there are not only the municipality but also the provincial administration and the administration of the County Council. Traffic
