Umnak

Umnak is an island of the Fox Islands, a group of islands in the middle of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.

Geography

Umnak, with a land area of ​​1777 km ² is the third largest island in the Aleutians. The elongated island reached in northeast-southwest direction, a length of 134 km. It is separated by Umnak Pass in the east of Unalaska.

On the island there are three composite volcanoes: Mount Okmok dominates the northeast, Mount Vsevidof and Mount Recheshnoi dominate the center of the island. The southwest of the island, however, is quite flat and covered by many lakes.

Population

The population of the island consists of 39 inhabitants ( 2000 census ) living in the only settlement Nikolski. The airport, Nikolski Air Station (IATA code UNS), located just east of the settlement.

History

The retreat of the glaciers about 11,000 years ago was in the southwest many lakes, such as Lake Chaluka, the Elbow Lake, the Idaliuk Lake and Salmon Lake arise, creating good living conditions for the Aleutian Islands. Anangula, a small island in the Nikolski Bay, was settled about 8400 years ago and probably abandoned after a violent eruption of Mount Okmok before about 8250 years. In the southwestern part of Umnak remains of many settlements in the Aleutian Islands were found to have existed in some cases up to our own time. Sandy Beach was probably inhabited by the task of Anangula. Also Idaliuk and Chaluka were large settlements existed several thousand years.

Fort Glenn, a former military base on the northwest coast of the island, played in World War II in the North Pacific theater an important role.
