UMO Jazz Orchestra

The UMO Jazz Orchestra is a Finnish Big Band Modern Jazz, which has existed since 1975. It was founded by the musicians Heikki Sarmanto and Esko Linnavalli and initially consisted of the musicians of the Finnish Radio Dance Orchestra.

UMO is the abbreviation for Uuden Musiikin Orkesteri (New Musical Orchestra). Since 1984, UMO is financed as a permanent orchestra of professional musicians by the Finnish Radio, by the Finnish Ministry of Culture and the City of Helsinki. So it acts as a national Finnish jazz big band; it plays about 80 concerts a year.

The UMO Jazz Orchestra has performed in various European countries as well as North America. The orchestra has played with musicians such as Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Dizzy Gillespie, Muhal Richard Abrams, McCoy Tyner, Michael Brecker, John Scofield, Tomasz Stanko and Gustavo Bergalli. For the 16 - member band Heikki Sarmanto, Gil Evans, Maria Schneider, Pekka Pohjola or Iro Haarla have written; the repertoire of the ensemble extends to the Modern Creative. The orchestra has made ​​numerous recordings that were released at labels like Slam, Naxos Jazz, Leo or A records. The orchestra was led until 1991 by Esko Linnavalli; upon him was followed by various personalities like Heikki Markku Johansson or Sarmanto. Currently, the orchestra will be conducted collectively.
