Umoja, Kenya

Umoja ( Swahili: Unit ) is a village in Kenya near the town of Archers Post in Samburu District, Rift Valley Province, where only women and their children live. They were rejected by their husbands or have them leave. The women work the fields and create jewelry.

The village was founded by the Samburu wife Rebecca Lolosoli. The women are working with the women's rights organization MADRE. They demand their right to a life without violence and develop new models to promote health and economic power of women. Her political activities including the action against the British soldiers who have raped in the 1980s and 90s by Lolosolis statement over 1,000 Samburu women.
