Unalaska is a city on the Aleutian island of Unalaska in the U.S. state of Alaska. The harbor area is located on the neighboring island of Amaknak and Dutch Harbor is called. Dutch Harbor is located within the city limits of Unalaska and is connected to the city by a bridge.

The Russian fur trade reached Unalaska when Stepan Glotov landed with its crew on 1 August 1759.

The City of Unalaska, named after the eponymous island. Dutch Harbor ( German Dutch Harbor ) was named by the Russians so because they believed that a Dutch vessel was the first European ship that would have reached the harbor.

Two kilometers north of the city is the Unalaska Airport.

History

1768 Unalaska became a Russian trading port for the fur packaging industry. 1825, the Russian Orthodox Church of the Resurrection was built. The priest created with the help of local resident the first Aleut writing system and translated religious texts into Aleut. At that time (1830-1840) lived only 200-400 Aleutians in Unalaska.

1880, after the purchase of Alaska by the United States, opened the Methodist church, a school, a hospital and an orphanage in Unalaska.

In early June 1942, the assets of the U.S. military were attacked in the city and the port of Japanese planes.

The current population is predominantly non- Unalaska Aleutian Islands.

The region's economy is dominated by fishing and processing. The port of Dutch Harbor was in 2012 (and therefore in the 16th year in a row ) as measured by weight ( 752 million pounds ) of deleted here for seafood, the most important fishing port in the United States.
