Uncompahgre Peak is the highest peak in the San Juan Mountains in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is part of Umcompahgre Wilderness Area and is only about eleven kilometers west of the town Lake City in Hinsdale County.

Geology

The peak area of ​​the Uncompahgre Peak is plateau- shaped and rises about 500 meters above the surrounding vast valleys. The slopes of the mountain are not very steep, only the northern slope has a 210 meter high cliff. Like all mountains in the San Juan Mountains is also Uncompahgre Peak volcanic origin, but no volcano. He has a saddle height of 1293 meters.

Ascent

For ascents to the sixth highest mountain in Colorado's Uncompahgre National Forest is preferably selected to the forest road 239. This begins southeast of the summit, about six kilometers west of Lake City. The sophisticated, highly convoluted trail rises from the southeast, with a length of six kilometers to 890 meters to the summit. There he ends near the western slope.

Name

Uncompahgre was named after the tributary of the Gunnison River. Uncompahgre comes from the word Uncompaghre the Ute and means roughly Dirty water or red water source. This refers probably to the place Ouray nearby hot springs. The English word peak is peak or summit.
