Undecylenic acid (10 - undecylenic acid ) is a monounsaturated fatty acid, which is used due to its fungicidal effect in medicine as an antifungal agent used to treat fungal infections such as candidiasis (thrush ). It is obtained by vacuum distillation of castor oil on the pyrolysis of ricinoleic acid. The undecylenic acid is not soluble in water, but miscible with alcohols, chloroform, ether and benzene.
The length of eleven carbon atoms of undecylenic acid is optimum for the observed in many fatty acids fungicidal action dar. This is because that the effect of in principle increases with the length, but again due to the low solubility in water and the reduced bioavailability of longer fatty acids decreases.
