Unfold the Future is the seventh studio album by the Swedish progressive rock band The Flower Kings. It appeared in 2002 as a double album on InsideOut Music.

Creation and publication

For the third double album of the band Daniel Gildenlöw was recruited as vocalist Roine Stolt and Hasse Fröberg addition, also the drummer Jaime Salazar was replaced by Zoltan Csörsz. Unfold the Future was recorded in summer 2002 in various studios and produced by Don Azzaro. There also appeared a limited edition digipak with bonus tracks.

Style

The Flower Kings Unfold the Future show up on again to experiment than on the previous play The Rainmaker and varied retro prog with jazz influences. Reminiscent of the style of Yes, Pain of Salvation, Frank Zappa and Miles Davis are perceptible. In addition to symphonic and anthemic pieces, there are playful instrumental passages, virtuoso solos and improvised. Many pieces are richly orchestrated and complex structure.

Reception

The press generally responded positively to the album, which is now often referred to as one of the most successful of the Flower Kings. On the Baby Blue Pages is indeed sometimes criticized, " [ t] he tunes not ignite, the parts often seem thrown together " or that nothing new would be offered; but it is also praised the album " The Flower Kings sound cosmos expanded and no unbearable lengths has " because " [ t] he compositions are bursting with variety, ingenuity and playfulness ." Says Tobias Blum of Rock Hard, " you can pay homage to the immense musical class of the Samaritans awesome ". The eclipsed magazine took Unfold the Future on its list of the 150 most important prog albums.
