Union County (New Jersey)
Union County is a county ( district ) in the state of New Jersey. In the 2000 census, the county had 522 541 inhabitants and a population density of 1,953 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Elizabeth.
Geography
The county has an area of 273 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Essex County, Hudson County, Middlesex County, Somerset County and Morris County.

According to the census of 2000, there were 522 541 people in the county. There were 186 124 households and 133 264 families. The population density was 1,953 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.51 % White, 20.78 % African American, 0.23 % Native American, 3.83 % Asian, 0.04 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 6.37 % from other races groups; 3.25% were descended from two or more races. 19.71 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 186 124 households out of which 34.00 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.60 % were married couples living together, 14.20% had a female householder with no husband. 28.40% were non-families. 23.60% of all households and 10.20% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.28 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread out with 24.90 % under the age of 18, 7.90 % from 18 to 24, 31.30 % from 25 to 44 years, 22.10% between 45 and 64 years and 13.80% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 92.70 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.90 males.
The median income for a household was $ 55,339, and the median income for a family was $ 65,234. Males have a median income of $ 44,544, women $ 32,487. The per capita income was $ 26,992. 8.40% of the population and 6.30% of families are below the poverty line. 10.50% of those under age 18 and 8.00% were 65 years or older.
