Union County is a county located in the state of New Mexico in the United States. Here 4,549 people live. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Clayton.
Geography
The County is located in the extreme northeastern New Mexico, bordered on the north by Colorado, on the east by Oklahoma and at Texas and has an area of 9922 square kilometers; which 2 square kilometers (0.02 percent) of water. The county is bordered clockwise to the County: Las Animas County ( Colorado ) Baca County (Colorado), Cimarron County ( Oklahoma), Dallam County ( Texas), Hartley County ( Texas), Quay County, Harding County and Colfax County.

According to the census of 2000, there were 4,174 people in the county. There were 1,733 households and 1,176 families. The population density was less than 1 inhabitant per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.38 % White, 0.00 % African American, 0.96 % Native American, 0.34 % Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander residents from the and 16.00% from other races groups; 2.20% were descended from two or more races. 35.10 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,733 households out of which 31.10 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.70 % were married couples living together, 9.10% had a female householder with no husband. 32.10 % were non-families. 30.00% of all households and 14.90% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.99.
