Union County (South Dakota)

The Union County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. In 2010, the County had 14,399 inhabitants and a population density of 12.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. The the county seat ( county seat ) is in Elk Point.

Geography

The County liegte in the extreme southeast of South Dakota at the mouth of the Big Sioux River in Missouri. Here, the Big Sioux River forms the border with Iowa and Missouri border with Nebraska.

The county has an area of 1210 km ², spread over 1193 km ² of land and 17 km ² water surface.

History

Today's Union County was founded in 1862. First it was Cole County, named after the regional deputies Austin Cole. Two years later it was renamed as part of a reorganization of the boundaries of the county, in view of the then ongoing American Civil War in Union County.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2010 living in Union County 14,399 people in 5833 households. The population density was 12.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 5833 households lived statistically 2.41 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 95.7 percent white, 1.1 percent African American, 0.6 percent Native American, 1.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.4 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 2.8 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

25.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.4 percent were between 18 and 64 and 14.4 percent were 65 years or older. 49.6 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 63,773. The per capita income was $ 34,310. 4.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
