Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities

The Union of the German Academies of Sciences, Academy shortly Union is an association of eight major German Academies of Sciences:

  • Berlin- Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, Headquarters: Berlin and Potsdam
  • Academy of Sciences in Göttingen
  • Heidelberg Academy of Sciences
  • Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz
  • North Rhine- Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Office: Dusseldorf
  • Saxon Academy of Sciences, Head Office: Leipzig
  • Academy of Sciences in Hamburg

The National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina is not a member, however there is a close cooperation.

History

Organised cooperation between the German Academies of Sciences was founded in 1893 in Leipzig as the so-called cartel. 1941, the cartel was then renamed the National Association of the German Academies of Sciences of the Nazis forced into Imperial Academy of German Science. After the Second World War, the Working Group of the German Academies of Sciences was founded in 1967 followed by the Conference of the German Academies of Sciences.

On 1 January 1999, the Conference of the German Academies of Sciences has renamed the Union of the German Academies of Sciences.

Organization

The organization represents the common interests of the member academies with more than 1900 scientists from different disciplines. The objective is the exchange of scientific, ensuring excellence in research, coordination and implementation of joint research projects and promotion of young scientists.

The Academy Union coordinates the Academy program, which is one of the largest and most important in the humanities and cultural studies programs in Germany. It comprises a total of 150 projects with 200 jobs in the fields dictionary, edition, scientific long-term observation and theoretical research in the social sciences.

The Union of the German Academies of Sciences represents the individual academies abroad and sends delegates to national and international scientific organizations. It coordinates the research projects of individual academies, conducting joint research projects and represents its member academies to the outside. She is a member of the All European Academies ( ALLEA ), the Amaldi Conference, the European Science Foundation ( ESF), the Global Network of Science Academies (IAP ), the InterAcademy Council (IAC ), the InterAcademy Medical Panel ( IAMP ), the International Human Rights Network of Academies and Scholarly Societies and the Union Académique International ( UAI ).

Together with the German Academy for Language and Literature, the Union of the German Academies of Sciences holds a regularly published ' Report on the situation of the German language ' in the public debate on the development of the German language. The report aims to provide science-based information on issues that are within the public discourse of particular interest.

The Union shall press and public relations work and organize joint events on current topics of science. Once a year, the Union academies present with a common Akademientag.

Together with Max Weber Foundation leads the Academy Union, the event series " Humanities in Dialogue " by, are discussed in the current issues of science, culture and society.

Since 2007, the Union Academy is also one of the winners of the New Responsibility Foundation, which has set itself the goal of networks of outstanding young talents in Germany to promote.
