Union of HorodÅ‚o

The Union of Horodło was in the village of Horodło closed in 1413 dynastic union between Poland and Lithuania. Wladyslaw Jagiello, King and of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Vytautas, was signed on October 2, 1413 in Horodło an agreement that fixed joined the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania with each other and at the same time the Catholic Church in Lithuania and the Lithuanian gentry gave certain privileges. It added former Polish-Lithuanian agreement on the Union of Krewo and Union of Vilnius and Radom. Thus, the dynastic alliance between the two countries has been deepened and laid the foundations for the supremacy of the Polish-Lithuanian element in future multi-ethnic state. With the Union, the privileges of the Catholic nobility were laid down and kept the Ruthenian boyars Greek Orthodox Confession of the power.

The agreement represented a further step towards the recognition of the Lithuanian nobility, which was equated in this union of two sovereign states with the Polish nobility.

In the agreement the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was also granted a separate Grand Duke and its own parliament. The Polish and Lithuanian knights should henceforth in all important matters - common advice - for example, the choice of kings and grand dukes. The Lithuanian and Ruthenian nobility got the same rights as the Polish szlachta, which meant that Ruthenian and Lithuanian noble families were included in the Polish szlachta and Lithuania coat of arms were introduced.
