Union Party (Faroe Islands)

Sambandsflokkurin, short Samband ( Faroese for contact, connectedness, Union), is a liberal and pro- Danish party of the Faroe Islands. The German name is Unionists.

History

The Sambandsflokkurin is the oldest Faroese party. Its creation was announced in the weekly Dimmalætting on August 18, 1906. Dimmalætting should remain the official organ of the party until the 1990s. For the first chairman was elected provost Fríðrikur Petersen.

The main concern of Samband to preserve the constitutional connection with Denmark, attracted liberals and conservatives alike. This first reached Samband an absolute majority of voters Faroese, while the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin in the minority but a short time later founded, aimed at a Faroese autonomy remained. Between the First and Second World War, a balance of power was established. Later, a stable multi-party system with the coordinate system formed out links-rechts/unionistisch-separatistisch. The share of the vote since 1945 Samband is 19 to 29 percent.

In the referendum on September 14, 1946 Samband recommended to reject the measure to be decided secession from Denmark. The unclear result provoked a constitutional crisis that could only be terminated by the Statute of Autonomy of 1948. Since then, the Unionists were taken together involved 35 years in the government, of which they made over 20 years the Prime Minister ( Løgmaður ).

The Kaj Leo Johannesen Samband president is head of government since 2008 Faroese. In the 2011 election, the party was able to record voices and profits received eight seats in Løgting.
