Union territory

A union territory ( engl. Union Territory, abbreviated UT) is a nationwide immediate area in India, a field which, in contrast to the states with their own local governments is directly under the central government in New Delhi. Currently, there are seven Union Territories in India:

Chandigarh and Delhi are cities with special status, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep are far away from the mainland island groups, Pondicherry, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli are former French or Portuguese colonies.

The Capital Territory Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry is headed by a Chief Minister. Chief Minister and Cabinet members are elected. Laws and regulations that may be adopted in the Union Territories, but require the sanction or ratification by the central government in New Delhi.
