UnionFS

Unionfs is a file system that was originally developed for the Plan 9 operating system. It was used to assign namespaces within the file systems processes.

Using unionfs are combined files of different file systems into a single logical file system, ie Files that are in the separate file systems in the same directory are displayed by unionfs in the same directory. Here are assigned to the individual involved hierarchies priorities so that an unambiguous assignment is ensured even in the event of the same file name.

A current application is the superposition of read-only file systems with RAM disks. This ensures that users of live CDs can change local files. In addition, with the Linux version of the Asus Eee PC for use.

Unionfs has been implemented for both Linux and various BSD variants, and has been successfully used for example live CDs of Damn Small Linux.
