United Democratic Front (Malawi)

The United Democratic Front (UDF) is a political party in Malawi, with headquarters in Lilongwe and assigns itself a liberal in the field. At present, the UDF is in addition to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP ), one of the strongest parties of Malawi dar. Together with 26 other parties from 21 African countries include the UDF to the Africa Liberal Network.

Founded as the United Democratic Front, as well as many other parties Malawi after abolished in 1993, the one-party state in a referendum and a multi-party system was introduced. Shortly after the founding of the UDF, this was one of the major political parties in Malawi and introduced from 1994 to 2004 with the President Bakili Muluzi of Malawi. Bakili Muluzi is still Chairman of the Party, but was replaced in 2004 by Bingu wa Mutharika as president. In these elections, the UDF secured by the 194 seats in Parliament just 49 Owing to the poor election result and because of disagreements with other members of the party left Bingu wa Mutharika shortly after his election victory, the UDF and founded in February 2005, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP ). He was followed very soon other members of the UDF. The presidential election of 2009 won Bingu wa Mutharika and the DPP.
