The early British general election, 1931 took place on 27 October 1931. In the elections of the deputies of the lower house (House of Commons ) were redetermined. The Labour Party had as a result a very hard, bitter defeat suffered because they lost more than 80 % of their mandates.
Electoral system, new parties
Was elected by a majority vote system. A restrictive clause did not exist.
- First appeared, which was founded in 1931 at National Liberal Party ( National Liberal ), a split from the Liberal Party.
- The National Labour Committee, co-founded by Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald in 1931, resigned as National Labour Organisation also at the first time.
- The grouping " Independent Labour Party" was still closely associated ( " affiliation" ) for the Labour Party. In 1932 she will be separated from Labour and run completely independently.
Election result
The Conservative Party won a landslide victory and secured 470 of 615 seats a two-thirds majority. The Labour Party and the Liberal Party had, however, suffered heavy losses.
Since August 1931, already a multi-party government of the National Government in office; this model of government was continued after the election. Background were the serious political and economic crises of the time.
