The British general election, 1955 took place on 26 May 1955. In the elections of the deputies of the lower house (House of Commons ) were redetermined.

Electoral system

Was chosen according to the simple majority system. A restrictive clause did not exist.

Election result

Election winner was the Conservative Party with 46.6 percent. You got 324 of 630 seats and thus achieved an absolute majority.

Others

The Tories came in October 1951 under the leadership of Winston Churchill to power; Churchill had become Prime Minister. In June 1953, Churchill suffered a stroke for the umpteenth time, which made him temporarily incapacitation. His party friends urged him to premature withdrawal; in April 1955 he finally resigned. The Tory majority in the House elected the new prime minister Anthony Eden. Eden was very popular and immediately set new elections.
