The British House of Commons 1983 elections were held on 9 June 1983. It was the biggest electoral success of the Conservative Party under Margaret Thatcher or a party since the general election won by Labour 1945.

The opposition parties SDP / Liberal Alliance and Labour received almost the same number of votes. Since 1918, this was the biggest electoral defeat of the Labour Party, the over 1979 lost more than 3 million votes and the Conservatives brought a majority of 144 seats, although they also suffered slight losses at the polls.

The SDP - Liberal Alliance was only 675 985 votes behind Labour, but was due to the relative majority suffrage 186 seats less.
