United Nations Population Fund

The United Nations Population Fund (english United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, United Nations until 1987 Fund for Population Activities; therefore still common abbreviation UNFPA) is the world's largest fund to finance population programs. It was established in 1967 as a trust fund and is since 1972 a subsidiary organ of the General Assembly of the United Nations. Babatunde Osotimehin Since 2011 is Executive Director.

To assess the demographic situation are since 1969 annual " World Population Reports" published. They serve as an advisory and decision-making basis on world population peaks. The priorities and eligibility criteria have evolved over the decades constantly changed. Given the high birth rates, the widespread illiteracy and the oppressed women's rights in most developing countries, the program focuses on today in the areas of

  • Sexual and reproductive health
  • Family planning
  • Education
  • Gender equality
  • Protection against violence against women and children

It will be financed by voluntary contributions from Member States of the United Nations.
