A complicated decision-making and development process led to the General Assembly of the United Nations on November 16, 1950 approved the establishment of the postal administration of the United Nations. On May 28, 1951 UN treaty with the United States of America was closed. It stipulated that the postal administration of the United States waived sovereign rights in the postal system to issue stamps in U.S. dollars can that can be used only at the UN headquarters. The first UN stamp was issued on 24 October 1951, was sold out within a few days. Similar agreements were later taken to the UN seats in Switzerland with the Swiss Post and in Austria with Austrian Post. The first stamps of the UN offices in the Palais des Nations in Geneva published on 4 October 1969 the first brands to the UN offices in the " UNO City " in Vienna at the opening on 24 August 1979.

Due to the postal automation of the UNPA stamps are usually only sold to stamp collectors around the world, while in the offices of the UN franking machines do their job. Since member countries of the UN are liable for contributions, you have reached an agreement that the proceeds sold UN stamps, will be deducted from the membership fee of the country.
