United Nations Security Council Resolution 1706

Resolution 1706 of the UN Security Council adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council on 31 August 2006 at its 5519 session.; the People's Republic of China, Qatar and Russia abstained. The resolution approves the deployment of UN troops in the Darfur region in Sudan.

The resolution, however, the consent of Sudan as a prerequisite for the deployment of 20,000 UN troops and police units is called to replace the AU forces in Darfur, as their mandate ends end of September 2006. The resolution was brought at the instigation of the veto powers United States and the United Kingdom to the vote, the States People's Republic of China, Russia and Qatar did not participate in the vote. Sudan had already made it clear before the vote that he will not agree to the deployment of UN forces and repeated his refusal after adoption of the resolution again.
