United Nations Security Council Resolution 1736

Resolution 1736 of the UN Security Council is a resolution on the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, adopted unanimously on 22 December 2006 at its 5610 session., The United Nations Security Council.

A number of past resolutions of the Security Council had authorized the Secretary-General of the United Nations contingents of MONUC ( Mission de l' Organisation des Nations Unies en République Démocratique du Congo ), ONUB ( Opération des Nations Unies au Burundi) and UNMIL (United Nations Mission in Liberia ) regroup as needed. With the resolution, the mandate of MONUC has been changed for the period from 1 January 2006 to 15 February 2007. As at 31 December 2006 ended the mandate of ONUB, the Security Council decided under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations, for the quotas of ONUB who were involved at that time in MONUC to move into the Democratic Republic of Congo and MONUC to insinuate. The measure, which concerned an infantry battalion and a military hospital, the strength of MONUC increased by up to 916 soldiers.

At the same time decided the panel, due to the end of 2006 fifty ONUB military observers in their home countries who participated in the Democratic Republic of Congo due to the UN resolutions 1669 and 1692 on the monitoring of elections and condemned the continuation of violent attacks between armed groups and militias in the east of the country and the danger posed to the civilian population.

The Security Council relied on its earlier decisions and statements by its President concerning the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and the region of the Great Lakes and decided on the recommendation of the UN Secretary General of 15 November 2006 (document S/2006/892 ) and also took into account the new Congolese government to make decisions. He expressed his determination to make the proposals of the Secretary-General's proposals for the continuation of the mandate on February 15, also before that date a decision.
