History

World War II

The army was drawn up after the Allied landings in North Africa ( Operation Torch ) on January 3, 1943 in Morocco. Her first commander was Lieutenant General Mark W. Clark.

Their first combat mission was Operation Avalanche during the Allied invasion of Italy in September 1943. For this you have the VI. U.S. Corps and the British X Corps assumed.

During the Battle of Monte Cassino 1944, the army was reinforced by the II U.S. Corps and the free French Expeditionary Corps (General Juin ). The VI. In December 1944, General Clark took over the command of the 15th Army Group and was replaced as commander of the 5th Army by General Lucian K. Truscott. In the spring of 1945, the 5th Army liberated the western Upper Italy to Genoa and to the Brenner pass. In October 1945, the Army was deactivated in Italy.

Post-war period

In June 1946, the reactivation took place in Chicago. The army was then part of the Army Reserve and is responsible for training and recruitment. In 1971, the army was merged with the then defunct 4th U.S. Army and the headquarters of Fort Sheridan (Illinois ) to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio / Texas laid.
