United States Army Pigeon Service

The United States Army Pigeon Service was a division of the U.S. Army in World War II. It dealt with the training and the use of carrier pigeons for military purposes.

The U.S. Army Pigeon Service consisted of 3,000 soldiers and 150 officers who were responsible for 54,000 pigeons. The pigeons were used in the field of ground forces, the navy and the air force. Some pigeons were specially trained to fly from the U.S. Army Pigeon Service during the night in order to avoid the enemy fire better. The most famous pigeon of the U.S. Army Pigeon Service was GI Joe, who was the only one awarded with the Dickin Medal.
